Yamaha YZF R15 versus Yamaha FZ16
Yamaha Motors India had made a comeback in India by launching the 2 new bikes – Yamaha YZF R15 and the Yamaha FZ16. What i am going to do here is test these two vehicles and give a review on which one is a better choice in which factor. The YZF R15 is selling quite well and the sight of the bike is becoming quite common. But what about the recently launched FZ16?
The YZF R15’s engine is a 150cc liquid-cooled with electronic fuel engine. This engine produces an impressive 17bhp and torque of 15Nm. The FZ16’s engine is also a 150cc air-cooled engine producing a decent 14bhp and a good torque of 14Nm.
The YZF R15 looks great when one sees them from the front, the low stance, the faired body and the beautifully designed fuel tank. The bike looks small when compared to its competition! The fully faired body doesnt look nice with its skinny tyres, which is the greatest defect in its looks! The silencer looks great in the YZF R15 and the rear is accompanied by a nice tail light along with split grab rear holders.

Coming to the FZ16 styling, it lies nowhere behind the YZF R15, but i think is better than the R15, well that according to ones taste. But seriously i think this bike looks awesome. Starting off with the huge tyres at the rear and a good one in the front too equipped heavily with a wide mudguard. Again the awesome fuel tank that shapes up the overall posture of the body. The seats of the rear passenger is raised up for a better view and with split grab tail holders. The engine is painted all black which supports the colours available. Again the rear looks huge with the huge tyres and the raised rear seat. The tail light lies in the rear mudguard just above the number plate. Yamaha had embedded a sporty exhaust pipe that goes well with the overall “street” theme of the bike. All the 3 colours flaming orange, midnight black and lava red looks great live! But the problem with the bike is the “stickered like console” and the bland wide handlebar which reduces the fun a little.
When you sit on the R15 the first time, you will be completely disturbed by the position as it is bent really low! But once you get the feel of it, you’ll be on your way. But personally i think this bike is not all that comfortable when in the city during crowded situations, it handles really well, but you will feel the power, the performance only when you take it to a greater speed. The R15 is based mainly for the 20-30 years age group. But i wouldn’t possibly propose this bike to you if your work place is close by. Even if you buy it, take your bike once a week to the highways for a better feel. Its a great bike when it comes to high speeds.
First of all, its a bigger bike. The FZ16 is the real one to look for daily use. The bike has a good grip over the roads and the suspensions do a good job when met with pot-holes. The ride is really nice and response to throttle is also great. The YZ16 stance is great in such a way that anyone of any age can drive this without any pain. The noise made by the muffler provides a sporty feel. Your cant rip the YZ16 like you can do to the R15, because the R15 is much more powerful than the YZ16, but can do a good job considering the power it produces.
Prices: (Showroom)
Yamaha YZF R15 – Rs 97,000
Yamaha FZ16 – Rs 65,000
The Fz16 is much more “value for money” than the YZF R15
Verdict:
You are a college student or an IT professional or some other guy whose work place is quite far or you are performance-power hungry – GET the YZF R15!!
You are an entertainment geek, wants to show off, ride smoothly through the traffic, your workplace is close by, you like your back or wants styling with performance and mileage – GET the FZ16!!

The YZF R15 gives about 35-40kmpl, while the YZ16 is said to give around 40-45kmpl.
It depends on what and how you have your daily activities are based on. I would say to go for the fz16.

Regarding FZ16 :
What about tall riders ? I am 6.3 Feets and hence could not go for RTR which i liked when it was launched, now can i opt for this one, would the seating position be problematic for me ???
Cz I tried CBZ Extreme and Unicorn both have good height, and comfortable legs position, Can you please tell me about this one ?
thank you.

Since youre tall (6.3 feet:o) , the Pulsar 200 and the FZ16 can do a good job for you. But since the Pulsar 200 is priced similar to the FZ16 and you are tall, i believe you shd go for the P200, otherwise its the FZ16.

Both bikes are very very good, but i will choose the FZ16 as its a Yamaha.

A customer specific Bike to with sports look. Superb
October 4th, 2008 at 5:47 am
Hmm.. The P200 is very racy and powerful, compared to the FZ16, but P200 does give a lot of problems.

October 26th, 2008 at 8:05 pm
Hi catalyst Not yzis Fz16 is good bike i booked red fz16 one month book in red it is better then unicorn and pulsar 150 is 153 cc bike but u daily runnning is 30to 35km u also goo with hero honda stunner? he looks good and average is also good 125 cc and bajaj new discover

i tried the new FZ16 and i have come up with this conclusion.
FZ16 has best acceleration wen compared to CBZX,pulsar150 or unicorn.
but 1t is only 14 bhp so acc. after 90 is bad wen cmprd to CBZX or hunk, and
also FZ16 is xpensive than any of these bikes.
so go for p200 or rtrfi instead of this.Looks also p200 and rtrfi are better than FZ16

well.. rahul, you have described the features of the R15. But at a price of almost 1 lakh, i dont think the R15 is a good choice. If you have the money, go for it.

Yamaha FZ 16 is a great bike and i am riding it since last month.
Yamaha Fz16 mileage is 35-40 km/litre but the looks that everyone gave to it is really mind blowing. If you are into biking than FZ16 won’t dissapoint you for sure.
the all new digital speedometer is awesome, its the same digital speedometer we used to play in computer games.
The Fz 16 bike is technologically advanced in all respects. The throttle response is mind blowing.
Ride it to believe it.
and about R15 Vs Fz16 i don’t like the tyres of R15… if the tyres of R15 can be changed to FZ 16 then it would become a great bike just my two cents

can anyone tell me about the Fz 16 accessories available in the market. Last time i enquire with my dealer only the leg gaurd was available with him.
Also a tip of new Yamaha Fz 16 owners:
After you have purchased the Fz 16 make sure you tell the service boy to apply Teflon coating to the bike because the tank’s mid black is too much scratcy , teflon coating will help you make it scratchproof.
i got my bike teflon coated during the first service, the price is Rs 400 and they will do the coating three times in a year. Hope this helps the new owners of F 16

YaMaHa FZ16 is surley a masterpiece for indian roads…he FZ16 was also born to revolutionize the era and carry out a mission. Its appearance more than any other, overflows with dynamism and originality. This quality solely belongs to yamaha’s advanced technologies.

June 7th, 2009 at 1:38 am
fz16 overall a good bike but its not at all comfortable for pillion.I found that seat of fz16 is bit hard and not suitable for long drives.
June 19th, 2009 at 3:43 am
i saw da pics of r125 really awesome. great wen compared to r15. can u tell me will it be launched in India.i planned to buy r15 but nw can i wait 4 r125?

hey my bros i own a yamaha r15 and no wonder its dammm fast i hit the speed of 140 max till now and i have a journey of 20 25 km per day i dind find any probs but every time i drive it i fly to the speed of 100 and plzplz fz16 can not at all be compared wid r15 it actuallly has a hot tyre thats it.it donesnt have pick up specially in doubles and to reach the speed of 100 u need to strive a lot in fz16 but in r15 with in 10 sec u r in 100 and more
June 30th, 2009 at 5:34 am
and coming to the r125 it is still not confirmed to have its launch in india coz it would be costing more than the r15 shurly it has more aggressive looks than the r15 but its pick up is as much as apache and fz16 so no wonder it gives sporty looks but i dont think it will go more than 120 or 130
July 3rd, 2009 at 6:26 pm

Hi guys…i’m a second year b.tech IT student….I am more than 6 feet tall…and i’m well built and 87kgs…can I be able to ride the r15???
December 14th, 2009 at 8:07 am
Hi guys well what i wud prefer you to first go ahead and check out the Pulsar 220 and then compare it with R15… i have P220 and trust me in performance wise its far more superior than R15!!!! think abt it bcoz investing 1k on a 150cc bike is stupidity…
January 3rd, 2010 at 4:23 am
i am planning to buy a bike and am confused between fz16 and r15. Considering that my height is 5ft 4” which among the two will be more suited for me?
March 19th, 2010 at 4:47 am
dude , your height is 5 ft4 !! honestly my cousin is 5ft5 and he bought a fazer fz and now regrets for that decision.he now decently owns a scooty es , rides it comfortably to work. even you should prefer moped or scooty or even cycle will be comfortable. go for ranger swing bicycle it is very good and comfortable
