As some of us would have already known, Ford India had launched a face lifted version of its first successful machine, the Ford Ikon recently. Mr Michael Boneham, president & managing director of Ford India was available at the launch of the new Ford Ikon in New Delhi in the 5th of November.

Ford had launched this model in order to stay in position and look appealing to the customers who are looking to buy a car within price brackets of 4.5L – 5.5L, in other words, to compete with the Maruti-Suzuki Dzire, Mahindra Renault Logan and the upcoming Tata Indigo.

How does it look?

Firstly, visually, it the refreshed front body with new bumpers and cute headlights that appeals the most, while the others remain unchanged except that the taillamps are now in clear lens. Overall, the change is not really awesome, but goes with the new front changes. But, considering the Ford Ikon as an old car, the changes are good.

What lies within?

The best part is the engine, also the best new inclusion is also the engine. The 1.3L Petrol engine that produces 70bhp @ 5500rpm and torque of 105Nm @ 2500rpm. This engine is yet to be judged. But!! the best part is that the 1.4L DuraTorq engine which is found in the Fiesta is set up in the car. A state-of-the-art, fuel efficient, turbo charged, common-rail Direct Injection Diesel engine that produces 68bhp of power and a 160Nm of Torque!! yup, the same engine that broke the record for fuel economy.

What about the interiors?

Well.. not really. They have made the seats beige with a combination of light brown and a steering wheel, brown and the dashboard, yet again, BROWN. A very bad taste of color combination i must say.. I seriously think that the dashboard design should have been changed. But whats new is the ‘new’ instrument cluster with a new design that hosts the tachometer, speedometer with LCD needles and LCD odometer.

When compared to the competition, i believe that the designs and colours are not bad at all. Well.. it goes with ones taste, so you dont have to go against it. I might hate it but you may love it.

Does it provide adequate safety?

Well.. Ford’s website says “The Ikon’s structure has been designed scientifically to absorb crash energy. Added to it are structural reinforcements that provide high levels of protection for occupants.” What they meant was that they have a good safety cage.

These are the features of safety in the Ikon according to Ford:

• Soft-feel steering wheel rim to reduce head injuries on impact
• Collapsible steering column to reduce intrusion distance
• Front seat belt “grabbers” to prevent uncontrolled movement during impact
• “Anti-submarine” seats to prevent occupants from slipping between seats and lap strap in frontal impacts
• Seat belts for all occupants

Is this enough to take this car out of the house? No ABS and no airbags?? the worst part is that they dont even keep it as an option. Thus, the safety requirements are not really appealing.
